The Pantanal region is often considered as one of the largest wetland ecosystems in the world. It is also one of the best places to see jaguars in the wild. Whereas jaguars in the dense jungles of the Amazon are almost impossible to see, the jaguars in the Pantanal travel, hunt, and rest on the elevated banks along the Pantanal Rivers, making them relatively easy to see from boats. The jaguars are now use to the eco-tourists and pay the boats little attention, often swimming among them. The rivers are prime hunting country for jaguars as their favorite prey, specifically capybara and caiman, are found in abundance in these areas. In addition to the jaguars and their prey another photogenic species that uses the rivers is the South American giant river otter where they feed on fish, eel, and other aquatic prey. In the uplands marsh deer and a variety of birds can be found.
